Australian punk outfit Body Type have shared another taste of their forthcoming album Tally, unveiling new single “Sick Bag” alongside a darkly humorous video ahead of the record’s release on July 24 via King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s p(doom) Records.
Already attracting attention from outlets including Stereogum, Under The Radar and Consequence, Tally finds the Sydney band broadening their sound while maintaining the sharp wit and melodic instincts that have defined their rise over the last decade.
Built around jagged guitars, post-punk tension and flashes of 1960s pop, the record was recorded at Los Angeles’ Velveteen Laboratory Studios with producer Stella Mozgawa, whose credits include Warpaint, Courtney Barnett and Kim Gordon. For Sophie McComish, Annabel Blackman, Cecil Coleman and Georgia Wilkinson-Derums, the album represents a conscious evolution rather than a reinvention.
Latest single “Sick Bag” also marks a first for the group, featuring a mellotron and delivering one of the band’s more vulnerable moments. Written by vocalist and guitarist Sophie McComish during a relationship that had become increasingly one-sided, the song examines the point where devotion begins to tip into self-erasure.
“Our first ever song to feature a mellotron, a true Stella moment,” McComish said. “This one just poured out of me like ink in a broken biro.”
The accompanying video, directed by Madeline Purdy and produced by Lucinda White, complements the song’s uneasy humour and emotional candour.
Since emerging, Body Type have steadily built an international reputation, sharing stages with Foo Fighters, Sleater-Kinney, Warpaint, Pixies, Fontaines D.C., Big Thief, Cate Le Bon, POND, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Frankie Cosmos, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Wolf Alice, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and DZ Deathrays. A London performance featuring a guest appearance from Gina Birch of The Raincoats further cemented the band’s place within a broader lineage of women pushing punk music forward.
The group’s momentum shows little sign of slowing, with Body Type set to head to the UK and Europe later this year in support of Courtney Barnett, taking Tally to international audiences as the album arrives.
