Following a triumphant summer of UK touring, Brighton’s jangle-psych quartet Hutch return with the vibrant and whimsical new single, ‘Rustle’.
Produced by the acclaimed Iggy B (renowned for his work with Penelope Isles, Gary Numan, and Spiritualized), the track captures Hutch’s signature sonic charm—shimmering guitars, ethereal harmonies, and vivid, imaginative storytelling. A buoyant ode to childlike wonder, it embodies the band’s hallmark lyrical optimism and innocence, making it a standout addition to their growing catalog.
The track deftly weaves soft, rhythmic drumming, bell-like keys, and playful melodies with psychedelic flourishes and dynamic tempo shifts. Its vibrant backdrop brims with vintage charm, highlighted by beautifully layered guitar work that enriches its texture. Beneath the whimsical surface, the song’s vibrant, almost fairytale-like lyricism offers a much-needed escape from modern-day anxieties.
The band recalls the track’s origins as a lockdown project, inspired by daydreams of sunny outdoor adventures with friends:
“We wrote the song in lockdown, dreaming of days where we’d be enjoying the sun with friends out in nature. ‘Rustle’ became this fictional child that would be the version of us who went and had these adventures while we were stuck at home, and then come back to tell us about all the fun they had gotten up to. It made days stuck inside and away from new experiences feel a little easier.
The name ‘rustle’ came from my obsession at the time with Arthur Russell, but I thought it was funny that his name wasn’t spelt like the action ‘to rustle’, and I vowed to name a future child I had Rustle, after the verb.
The song then largely was left untouched for a few years, as Hutch started gigging and we started to take a different direction with the music. I think it was for a show in Nottingham, we wanted to start the set with a fun, high energy song (we were playing an afternoon set in the bar of Bodega for a festival, and wanted to try and grab the attention of whoever found themselves in the room as we started playing), and someone just said “hey what about rustle?” And so it came back into our lives. The redemption of Rustle: from not being in the set to being a song we wanted to record, that reflects the innocence and excitement of adventures and sharing them with friends.
Now, Rustle to us represents how grateful we are to be together, on this small boat full of friends hurtling down a narrow, rocky river with sunshine glistening off the surface. It’s a song that was written about being able to do exactly what we are doing now; a reminder to be grateful to be spending time with your best friends.”
Since their debut EP Smile and Wave, Hutch has garnered national acclaim, with radio play from the likes of BBC Radio 6 Music and Radio X, Live, the band have toured all over the uk and opened for big names including WITCH and The Last Dinner Party. ‘Rustle’ continues the trend, bringing vibrant musicality and more of the musical intricacy and vintage feel that makes Hutch so unique.
