Track: DIIV Announce ZIRP! And Unveil New Single ‘The Fountain’

DIIV have officially unveiled their fifth studio album, ZIRP!, arriving 30 October via Fantasy Records, alongside its lead single ‘The Fountain’. After teasing fans with a mysterious hotline number sent by mail last week, the New York band have revealed a record that seeks to redefine the space between underground guitar music and modern pop, introducing what they describe as “The New Alternative.”

Stream it HERE.

The announcement marks another evolution for a band that has consistently resisted easy categorisation. Since emerging in the early 2010s, DIIV have blurred the boundaries between shoegaze, dream pop, grunge and indie rock, building a catalogue that has continually paired dense, immersive guitars with an instinct for memorable melody. On ZIRP!, frontman Zachary Cole Smith, alongside Andrew Bailey, Colin Caulfield and Ben Newman, lean further into that balance, embracing both their experimental roots and a sharpened pop sensibility.

Produced by A. G. Cook, whose work with Charli XCX and Caroline Polachek has helped shape contemporary pop’s most adventurous corners, ZIRP! expands on the social anxieties explored on 2024’s Frog In Boiling Water. The album’s title references the era of zero interest rate policies, using the economic shorthand as a lens through which to examine technology, platform capitalism, algorithmic culture and the increasingly transactional nature of modern life.

Lead single ‘The Fountain’ offers an immediate glimpse into that new direction. Retaining the band’s signature wall of guitars while introducing tighter rhythms and some of their most direct melodies to date, the track suggests a group becoming increasingly comfortable allowing accessibility and experimentation to coexist.

Cook’s role extended well beyond production. Rather than dismantling the band’s demos, he immersed himself in DIIV’s live performances, studying the dynamics that have made them one of alternative rock’s most compelling live acts. The result is an album built around live instrumentation, layered guitar textures and organic performances rather than studio manipulation, despite Cook’s reputation for digital experimentation.

The release of ZIRP! arrives ahead of an extensive run of international performances, including appearances at Balaclava Fest in Brazil, Pitchfork Music Festival in Paris and London, Sonic City in Belgium, dates supporting Interpol across North America, and a special show with Basement in Los Angeles.
