Track: Chelsea Wolfe announces ninth album The Dark and shares new single ‘Cold’

Chelsea Wolfe has announced her ninth studio album, The Dark, due for release on 21 August via Loma Vista Recordings, alongside the arrival of its striking opening track, ‘Cold’. Stream it HERE.

The first taste of the new record sees Wolfe leaning into emotional restraint rather than sheer weight. Built around an aching melody that gradually unfolds into an expansive chorus, ‘Cold’ showcases a songwriter increasingly confident in allowing space to amplify emotion. It arrives with an accompanying music video and offers an early glimpse into an album that promises to be one of the most intimate and carefully crafted of her career.

Written with new collaborator Jennifer Decilveo alongside longtime creative partner Ben Chisholm, The Dark deliberately strips back layers that have often defined Wolfe’s sound. The result places greater focus on her songwriting while retaining the atmosphere that has long made her one of heavy music’s most distinctive voices.

The record also boasts an impressive cast of contributors, including Robin Finck (Nine Inch Nails), Matt Chamberlain( Pearl Jam), Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age), Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint) and Justin Meldal-Johnsen, whose collective performances deepen the album’s cinematic scope without overshadowing Wolfe’s voice.

Inspired by the idea of venturing into the woods at one’s darkest moment and confronting fear head-on, The Dark explores transformation, resilience and the uneasy comfort found in uncertainty. Mystery and symbolism have always been central to Wolfe’s work, but here they appear in service of songs that feel more direct and emotionally exposed.

The announcement continues a prolific new chapter for Wolfe. In recent weeks she has unveiled the double A-side ‘The Dark’ / ‘Death Is Not The End’, revealed a collaboration with fragrance house Heretic on the GHOSTS perfume collection, and announced new US and European tour dates. The response from fans has already been emphatic, with a mystery pre-order released through her mailing list selling out in under half an hour.

Across a career that has comfortably traversed doom metal, folk, industrial and gothic art rock, Chelsea Wolfe has consistently resisted easy categorisation. If ‘Cold’ is any indication, The Dark finds her refining that singular vision rather than reinventing it, delivering another compelling chapter from one of alternative music’s most distinctive artists.
