Track: Fanny Lumsden looks homeward on new single ‘Traditions’

Fanny Lumsden is wrestling with the pull of family, ambition and independence on ‘Traditions’, the title track from her forthcoming fifth album, out October 30.

The new single finds the singer-songwriter considering what traditions are worth carrying forward and which ones need to change. Growing up on a sheep farm, building an international music career and now balancing touring with her own family gives Lumsden plenty to work with. Rather than treating tradition as something fixed, she examines the complicated territory between belonging and forging your own path.

The accompanying video takes those ideas back to their source. Shot on her family’s sheep and cropping farm in the NSW Riverina and directed by TJ Power, it takes a playful look at generations of country family life while acknowledging that preserving the past doesn’t necessarily mean repeating it.

‘Traditions’ follows previous singles ‘Mother’s Eyes’ and ‘Difficult Woman’ and sits at the centre of the new 11-track album. Produced by Steven Schram, the record was made with Lumsden and her band The Daddies, aka the Prawn Stars, playing live in the studio. Each track was captured in a single take, giving the album a more immediate band sound.

The record arrives during another busy year for Lumsden, following Australian and UK headline tours and festival appearances. Her increasingly international career has taken the two-time ARIA winner from the country halls of regional Australia to Glastonbury, while recent shows have included arena dates with Paul Kelly and Lucinda Williams and three sold-out Enmore Theatre dates supporting Rob Thomas.

‘Traditions’ arrives October 30, followed by an album launch in Tooma in the NSW Riverina on October 31 and an east coast tour in November. For an artist whose career has increasingly taken her away from the farm, the new record finds Lumsden looking back at where she came from without suggesting she needs to stay there.
