Melbourne singer-songwriter Grace Mitchell has unveiled two more tracks from her forthcoming debut album Daughter of the King, continuing to showcase an artist unafraid to move between expansive indie rock and intimate songwriting.
Following the release of previous singles Destroy and Head On, the latter earning praise for its grunge-infused energy while Destroy landed high rotation on Double J, Mitchell now returns with the AA-side pairing of Baseball Hat and In The Other Room. Together, the two songs reveal contrasting emotional landscapes while reinforcing the breadth of the record due later this year.
Baseball Hat drifts through hazy guitars and reflective melodies as Mitchell examines the uneasy feeling of realising life has fallen short of youthful expectations. “It’s about wishing for something more,” she explains. “It’s about reflecting on your life until a particular moment and realizing it isn’t enough of the dream you imagined.”
Its companion piece, In The Other Room, strips everything back. Built around a quieter arrangement, the song captures the slow erosion of intimacy within a relationship, documenting the moment when familiarity gives way to emotional distance. As Mitchell puts it, it explores the feeling of waking up beside someone only to realise “you’ve been reduced to housemates.”
The new singles further hint at the emotional range of Daughter of the King, which arrives on September 4 via Cheersquad Records and Tapes. Available on limited-edition translucent orange vinyl, restricted to just 100 copies, alongside a standard black pressing, the album marks Mitchell’s first full-length statement after establishing herself as one of Melbourne’s emerging songwriting talents.
Mitchell will celebrate the album’s release with an official launch show at Shotkickers in Melbourne on September 18 before returning for Chicksquad at The Corner Hotel on October 31, with additional live dates still to be announced.
