Mastodon have announced their long-awaited new album Marrow Deep, set for release on 28 August via Loma Vista Recordings, alongside the towering new single ‘Snakes For Dinner’, which reunites the Atlanta metal giants with Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme for his first appearance on a Mastodon recording in two decades.
Arriving five years after the acclaimed Hushed and Grim, Marrow Deep finds founding members Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders and Bill Kelliher navigating profound personal loss while embracing a renewed creative purpose. Drawing inspiration from the Three Fates of Greek mythology, the album explores the fragile threads binding life, grief and destiny, channeling those themes into music that remains unmistakably Mastodon while opening the door to a new chapter. It also marks the band’s first full-length featuring guitarist Nick Johnston, with additional contributions from keyboardist João Nogueira.
Lead single ‘Snakes For Dinner’ captures that evolution. Built around crushing riffs and soaring melodic passages, the track balances Mastodon’s trademark progressive heaviness with an emotional weight shaped by absence and resilience. Josh Homme’s guest vocal adds another layer of gravitas, his first collaboration with the band since ‘Colony of Birchmen’ from 2006’s Blood Mountain, creating a full-circle moment for two of heavy music’s most adventurous acts.
The announcement follows the release of The Mastodon in the Room, a candid short film documenting the band’s attempts to process the departure of founding guitarist Brent Hinds after 25 years. Rather than dwelling solely on the past, Marrow Deep signals a band determined to move forward, fuelled by fresh chemistry and a rediscovered sense of purpose. Produced by the band alongside Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou, with mixing by Andrew Scheps, the album promises another ambitious entry in one of modern metal’s most consistently inventive catalogues.
