Newcastle-based five-piece Pit Pony have shared their new single titled ‘Cut Open’ alongside the news of their upcoming new album ‘Dead Stars’ due out 7th February via Clue Records / EMI North.
Frontperson Jackie shares:
“’Cut Open’ isn’t a reflection of how I always feel, but I think most people experience days when everything just feels off. It’s a reminder that we’re not alone in that. Music and creativity help with it – it’s therapeutic. Once the song’s written, I can let those feelings go.”
The song’s title and imagery also carry deeper meaning. ‘Cut Open’ references Graham Greene’s 1938 novel ‘Brighton Rock’ and the famous quote about people being like a stick of rock – stuck with an unchanging identity, “It’s like those sticks of rock. Bite one all the way down, you’ll still read Brighton. That’s human nature”. In this song, Pit Pony challenges that idea. “We can change”, says Jackie. “We’re not fixed. And while self-reflection can be painful, especially when public, it’s a key part of growth.”
A slice of swooning, mournful northern brilliance. Plodding bass, jangly guitars, and sweeping strings, all topped by the perfectly fitting vocals that tie the whole song together with the intelligent, thoughtful lyrics.
