Naarm/Melbourne post-punk outfit Radio Free Alice have returned with ‘Kick in the Shins’, a restless new single that arrives as the band continue a breakout international run across Europe and the UK. Stream it HERE.
Built around jagged guitars, driving rhythms and the unmistakable punch of Michael Phillips’ saxophone, ‘Kick in the Shins’ captures Radio Free Alice at their most immediate. Frontman Noah Learmonth delivers another sharply observed vocal performance, tracing feelings of alienation and cultural dislocation through lyrics that never lose sight of the band’s instinct for melody.
According to Learmonth, the track emerged from the unlikely marriage of two unfinished songs. “We loved the verse of one of them and the chorus of the other,” he explained, with the combined result becoming a song designed to provoke movement as much as reflection. Beneath its propulsive energy, ‘Kick in the Shins’ examines the uncertainty of navigating a world that increasingly feels unfamiliar, and the isolation that can follow.
The single once again reunites the band with producer Ewan Pearson and mixer Peter Katis, whose respective work with Depeche Mode, Röyksopp, Interpol, Death Cab for Cutie and The National continues to complement Radio Free Alice’s evolving sound without diluting its urgency.
Accompanying the release is a new visualiser filmed by Hannah Murrell in Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer, France, arriving as the quartet continue an increasingly hectic overseas schedule. Fresh from appearances at Rock Werchter and Bilbao, where they were singled out by NME as one of the standout acts of the weekend, the band are set to continue their international ascent with performances at Tramlines, Reading Festival, Way Out West in Sweden and Riot Fest in Chicago.
The release follows last month’s Atlantic Records debut, ‘Lunch Money’, and a breakthrough North American visit that included a performance at Governor’s Ball in New York alongside a sold-out headline show at Baby’s All Right. As momentum continues to build on both sides of the Atlantic, ‘Kick in the Shins’ finds Radio Free Alice reinforcing why they have become one of Australia’s most exciting emerging guitar bands.
