Sunshine Coast singer-songwriter Louella has introduced herself with ‘Before I Go’, a debut single that blends folk, soul and pop into an intimate reflection on love, loss and the lingering echoes of a relationship that can no longer be reclaimed.
Centred on the emotional weight of letting go, Before I Go explores the space between memory and acceptance, capturing the uncertainty that follows when a shared future dissolves. Recorded in part within expansive halls to capture their natural ambience, the track carries a warmth that complements its reflective tone. Contributions from acclaimed Australian musicians Graham Ritchie (Thelma Plum, Holy Holy) and Louise and Sarah King (Katie Noonan) add further richness to the arrangement without overwhelming the song’s intimacy.
Musically, Before I Go is built around an acoustic guitar foundation, gradually expanding as delicate strings enter the arrangement. The measured build gives the song a quiet sense of momentum, while Louella’s expressive vocal rises effortlessly above the instrumentation, carrying the emotional weight of the narrative without ever feeling overstated.
The accompanying video, directed by Victor Ivanov, transports the story to Tokyo, where Louella moves through crowded streets, tranquil cherry blossom parks and the city’s vast metro system. The changing landscapes mirror the emotional dislocation at the heart of the song, contrasting moments of stillness with the constant movement of life continuing around her.
Already recognised as an emerging talent, Louella has shared stages with Ella Hartwig and Table Manners, collaborated with producers Blake Malone (Amy Shark) and Paul Bromley (Ziggy Alberts), and recently earned a nomination for the Listen Up Music Songwriting Prize, where she will perform Before I Go at this year’s Sydney showcase.
