Those smooth as hell, ARIA double-platinum funk-makers, Winston Surfshirt, have teamed up with another multi ARIA-Award winning artist, Genesis Owusu to share a double-dose of euphoric funk in new single, There’s Only One – out today via Sweat It Out and BMG. One of Australia’s best-loved acts, Winston Surfshirt continue their mission to do everything with feeling – from funked-up slow jams to anthemic festival gems. So this latest offering, alongside 2021 icon Owusu, fits their mission perfectly indeed.

A buttery hybrid of rap and disco, “There’s Only One” is a true, balmy summer evening soundtrack. Featuring Winston’s trademark falsetto alongside Owusu’s beautifully deep, sung-spoken verses, the track bounces along golden sand like a bright, crisp beach ball. Some tight percussion and sprinklings of brass also add to the irresistible charm of this smooth, shining, modern love song.

Frontman Winston says of the new single: “I started the beat pre-covid in London and instantly fell in love with it. Hearing the intro takes me straight back to walking through London blasting the beat in my headphones before the world shut down. Back in Sydney during lockdown we turned it into a song. For a feature our first thought was Genesis, we’ve known him for a while now and always wanted to work with him. The timing was right, so we sent him the tune and he sent a verse and bridge back a day later. No need for any changes, it was perfection.”

“Winston and I did this track a while ago, glad it’s seeing the light of day. Super smooth and summery. Hope my girlfriend likes my verse.” -Genesis Owusu

“There’s Only One” follows the six-piece’s single collab Complicated with Young Franco. As with its predecessor, All Of The Little Things (feat California-based rapper Ramirez) both tracks scored acclaim from the likes of triple j and community radio. This new music has been a welcome return for fans. The band’s 2019 journey included releasing eagerly awaited sophomore album Apple Crumble to rave reviews, and performing a headline set at Splendour In The Grass. Cue 2020, frontman Winston welcomed his first child and collaborated with friend Angus Stone on the Dope Lemon track Every Day Is A Holiday.

Equally indefinable by genre or style, guest artist Genesis Owusu saw his breakout year in 2021 with debut album, Smiling With No Teeth, securing triple j’s Album of the Year and 4 ARIA award titles, radio support from triple j and BBC Radio, plus global acclaim from tastemakers and critics alike, including The Needle Drop, NME, Line of Best Fit, The Guardian, Teen Vogue, Rolling Stone, The Australian, ICON and many more. Owusu next embarks on tours across Australia and North America in 2022.
