New Music: Blessa announce Love is an Evol word EP, stream Unfurl

Sheffield five piece Blessa are preparing for the release of their debut EP ‘Love is an Evol word’ through their own label Carmel Records on 23rd June in conjunction with Generator.

The band traces its beginnings back to English Literature classes at one of the cities Universities. The two protagonists, Olivia (vocals) and Alex (guitar) formulated an artistic outlook for their newly formed coalition, centering on prose, poetry and the physical world around them, New York School poets such as Frank O’Hara and John Ashbery, and the binaries of darkness/light and open/closed spaces. The band expanded over time to include Andy (drums), Rob (guitar) and Jake (bass).

Like the band’s debut single ‘Between Times’, the EP was recorded by Hookworms MJ at Suburban Homes Studios in Leeds. From it the band are streaming the beautiful and fragile Unfurl. It follows a graceful path, with Olivia’s vocal always at the forefront, surrounded but never overcome by this alt-rock / grunge accompaniment. It’s hazy sound is helped with these hollow guitars and these cymbal heavy drums, but it’s this persuasive melody that catches you out most of all.

Catch the band live at:
May 10th  The Great Escape Festival, Brighton
May 24th  Evolution Emerging @ The Cluny, Newcastle
May 26th Gold Sounds Festival @ Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
