Whitley Bay heroes Lisbon take a big ferocious bite out of the music industry’s ego with their latest hit-in-the-making “Shark”. The band strike a much heavier route than usual but it’s still right up there with their usual distinctive jangly guitar pop, packed full of insistent rhythms, soaring vocals (a lot more ahhhs for your money on this one – ideal for the crowds on their ongoing tour!) and searing crunching riffs.

Starting with building feedback, the track continues to build and build across its 3 minutes plus, exploring the extended metaphor of the music world as a dangerous ocean full of possibilities but also many dangerous characters like the eponymous shark. Lisbon could almost trademark the “where now?” motif, it recurring across their impressive catalogue to date, but here it seems more about whether it’s safe to go back into the water a la “Jaws 2” and equally, where to head next in their career which is going from strength to strength.

Lisbon are on the road again for the second time this year – check them out while they’re still in the more intimate venues as stadiums are surely next on the agenda. To borrow the Jaws lingo, I think they’re going to need a bigger stage.

Tickets can be bought here for their tour. Here’s the info:

23/05 The Maze, Nottingham
24/05 Sound Control, Manchester
25/05 University, Sheffield
26/05 FRüIT, Hull
27/05 Surf Cafe, Newcastle
28/05 Surf Cafe, Newcastle
29/05 Sneaky Pete’s, Edinburgh
31/05 Islington Academy, London
02/06 Buskers, Dundee
03/06 Fibbers, York
04/06 The Cookie, Leicester

They’ve yet to release a duff single so check out their impressive back catalogue here. They also love a chat and a catch up (as do I!) so see what lead singer Matty and I had to waffle about in 2015 and this year too.
