It seems almost laughable that Telegram only formed just over eighteen months ago, given everything they have achieved since, but so it is that Matt Saunders (vocals/ guitar), Matt Wood (guitar), Oli Paget-Moon (bass) and Jordan Cook (drums) came together – moulding their love of Roxy Music, krautrock and proto-punk into something rather special.
Coming out on July 10th is a new single – Aeons, a follow up to their ‘Outside Inside’ single. Its on their own Gram Gram label, and is available for download and on a limited edition 7″ white vinyl. Its available for pre-order on Pledge Music right now, along with the chance to buy an exclusive tee design and poster. If all that wasn’t enough, Aeons is backed by a version of Needles in the Camels Eye, from Brian Eno’s Here come the Warm Jets album.
It opens with this bubbling bassline, and launches straight into this darkly attitude driven verse, something between post punk and psych (an area the band brilliantly inhabit often) surrounding the vocal though there’s these razor sharp guitar lines, soaked in feedback and echo. As is the bands want, when they hit the chorus its a(nother) memorable one. It continues to ebb and flow, early (the) Edge is within the sights of the band as the guitar fights against the warmth of the bass, neither really winning out. Its that chorus that does though. Win that is.
Telegram – the best band around at the moment? Dunno, but its got to be close, right?
