News: Black Bordello Announce New EP Midheaven Tempest, Share Theatrical New Single ‘Fugue’

South East London art-rock outfit Black Bordello have announced their forthcoming EP Midheaven Tempest, arriving on 18th September 2026 via AWAL, alongside the release of its striking first single, ‘Fugue’.

Serving as the first glimpse into the band’s next chapter, ‘Fugue’ expands Black Bordello’s distinctive blend of art-rock, post-punk and gothic experimentation while embracing the melodic grandeur and dramatic sweep of 1970s rock. Rich in cinematic atmosphere, the single hints at an EP built on contrasts—where ornate arrangements collide with raw immediacy, and gothic romanticism is punctuated by moments of startling clarity.

Opening with a romantic Hammond organ that evokes 1920s picture houses and travelling carnival calliopes, ‘Fugue’ initially conjures a Fitzgeraldian world of sepia-tinted nostalgia. That illusion is swiftly dismantled as the song shifts into a buoyant, psychedelic theatricality, replacing wistfulness with biting satire. Echoing the world-weary detachment of Peggy Lee’s Is That All There Is?, the track unfolds through layers of Velvet Underground-inspired fuzz, the brooding atmosphere of Black Heart Procession, and Nick Cave-esque refrains. Abrupt changes in tempo and melody reinforce the band’s refusal to settle into comfortable nostalgia, instead embracing unpredictability and experimentation.

Speaking about the single, vocalist and songwriter Sienna Bordello says:

“Fugue is a joyful stab into the cardboard cutouts on the set of society’s stage. It’s our gift to music nerds, inspired by Bach.”

Produced by Balazs Altsach, Midheaven Tempest marks Black Bordello’s most expansive release to date. Blending industrial textures, trip-hop atmospheres, gothic rock and chamber arrangements, the EP pushes further into cinematic and experimental territory while maintaining the theatrical sensibility that has become synonymous with the band’s sound.

Rooted in South East London, Black Bordello unite musicians from diverse international backgrounds. Fronted by Sienna Bordello—whose Middle Eastern and Mediterranean heritage informs her songwriting and performance—the band also features Daniel Gowers (drums and backing vocals), Melody Wayfare (keyboards and backing vocals), Jerome Alexandre (lead guitar) and Nick Dimitriov (bass). Their multicultural makeup, including Hong Kong-born keyboardist Melody Wayfare and Bulgarian bassist Nick Dimitriov, contributes to the project’s expansive, genre-defying musical identity.

Since emerging in the wake of the pandemic, Black Bordello have steadily established themselves as one of London’s most compelling live acts. They have toured alongside The Libertines and Pete Doherty, while sharing stages with Goat Girl, Fat Dog, Bad Nerves and Pretty Sick. Their work has attracted support from BBC Radio 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq, particularly for the single ‘Nunhead’, alongside coverage from CLASH, Loud & Quiet, So Young, DORK, Fred Perry Subculture and Louder Than War.

Their live reputation has taken them to venues including Electric Ballroom, Dingwalls, MOTH Club and The Lexington, as well as overseas appearances at New York’s New Colossus Festival. Their connection to post-punk’s legacy was further cemented when Bauhaus bassist David J Haskins remixed ‘Nunhead’, reinforcing the lineage that continues to inform their evolving sound.

Drawing together post-punk, psychedelia, gothic rock, vaudeville and chamber pop—with comparisons often made to Kate Bush, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Björk and Massive Attack—Black Bordello continue to carve out a singular space within the UK’s alternative landscape. ‘Fugue’ offers an enticing introduction to Midheaven Tempest, an EP that promises to be darker, more emotionally charged and sonically adventurous than anything the band have released before.

‘Fugue’ is out now, with Midheaven Tempest following on 18th September 2026 via AWAL.
