Twenty years after Suburban Songbook quietly transformed Bob Evans from Kevin Mitchell’s side project into one of Australia’s most treasured storytellers, the singer-songwriter is taking the beloved album back on the road.
Marking two decades since the release of his acclaimed sophomore record, Bob Evans has announced a national Suburban Songbook 20th Anniversary Tour for September and October 2026. For the first time in years, the album will be performed in full and in sequence with a full band, giving audiences the opportunity to revisit a record that has long occupied a special place in Australian music.
Released in 2006, Suburban Songbook represented a turning point for Mitchell. Having spent the previous decade fronting Perth alt-rock favourites Jebediah, he travelled to Nashville to record the album with producer Brad Jones, embracing a gentler palette that drew equally from folk-pop, country and classic songwriting traditions. The gamble paid off. Powered by tracks such as ‘Don’t You Think It’s Time’, ‘Nowhere Without You’ and ‘Sadness & Whiskey’, the album reached No. 16 on the ARIA charts, earned Gold certification and won the ARIA Award for Best Adult Contemporary Album.
Two decades later, its appeal remains undimmed. In addition to the anniversary tour, Evans will also release a special 20th Anniversary Edition of Suburban Songbook on September 4, available digitally and on limited edition ‘gold nugget’ vinyl. The remastered digital release will feature previously unheard four-track demos recorded in the back room of Mitchell’s Perth rental between 2003 and 2006.
With a specially assembled band in tow, the upcoming tour promises to celebrate one of Australia’s defining singer-songwriter albums in the manner it deserves: performed in full, in order and with all the warmth, wistfulness and understated charm that made Suburban Songbook endure long after its original release.
For fans who grew up with the album, and for those discovering it for the first time, the Suburban Songbook anniversary tour offers a rare chance to step back into one of Australian music’s most quietly influential chapters.
