Three decades on from their humble beginnings in Bellingham, Washington, Death Cab For Cutie remain one of indie rock’s most enduring and influential institutions. And when Ben Gibbard and co. return to Australia this November on the I Built You A Tower Tour, they’ll be joined by one of the country’s most compelling young acts, with Melbourne dream-pop trio Acopia today confirmed as special guests.
The newly announced support slot brings together two bands united by a shared appreciation for atmosphere and emotional weight. While Death Cab For Cutie have spent nearly 30 years refining their blend of aching lyricism and luminous melodies, Acopia have quietly emerged as one of Australia’s most captivating exports, weaving together hushed vocals, intricate rhythms and immersive soundscapes that have earned them sold-out shows across the UK, Europe and Australia.
The tour begins at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on November 12 before heading to Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena on November 13 and wrapping up at Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall on November 15. Across the three dates, fans can expect a set spanning the band’s formidable catalogue alongside material from their latest album, I Built You A Tower, as Death Cab For Cutie continue to balance nostalgia with an eye firmly fixed on the future.
Few bands have navigated the shifting tides of alternative music quite like Death Cab For Cutie. Formed in 1997, the group evolved from college-radio outsiders into one of the defining bands of the 21st century, with Ben Gibbard’s introspective songwriting and melodic instincts helping shape an entire generation of indie rock. Nearly three decades after recording the lo-fi debut You Can Play These Songs With Chords, the band remain as creatively restless as ever, preparing to usher in a new chapter with ANTI- Records and fresh music expected in 2026.
Meanwhile, Acopia’s rise has been equally remarkable. Since forming in 2018, Kate Durman, Lachlan McGeehan and Morgan Wright have cultivated a devoted following with their dreamlike blend of intimacy and texture. Their acclaimed third album Blush Response, released in 2025, further cemented their reputation as masters of restraint and atmosphere, with live performances that transform rooms into spaces of quiet emotional release.
With one of indie rock’s most beloved bands sharing the stage with one of Australia’s most exciting contemporary voices, November’s shows promise to bridge generations of alternative music while reaffirming why Death Cab For Cutie continue to occupy such a singular place in the genre’s history.
