YOUR favourite alt.rock shredder, J. Mascis – I mean are the guitar breaks in “Freak Scene” the best ever committed to tape? There’s a strong argument – has announced the excellent news that Dinosaur Jr. are all set to release their thirteenth studio album, Sweep It Into Space, on Jagjaguwar come April 23rd; which good news cake is accompanied by the cherry on top of “I Ran Away”, the animation accompanying which you can see below.

Sweep It Into Space is their first new collection of music since 2016’s Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not. Originally scheduled for mid-2020, the release was iced by the ‘rona; which is kind of a shame for our past selves, but good news for our 2021 editions, who get delight in the dirty melodic noise now instead.

“I Ran Away” actually features a name session musician, an extra 12 strings in the studio coming from none other than Kurt Vile, who co-produced the album.

After recording with Kurt got disrupted, J Mascis says he “… ended up just mimicking a few things he’d done.

“I was listening to a lot of Thin Lizzy, so I was trying to get some of that duelling twin lead sound. But the recording session was pretty well finished by the time things really hit the fan. When the lockdown happened in March, that meant I was on my own. But it was cool.”

Sweep It Into Space will be released by Jagjaguwar digitally, on CD and on vinyl on April 23rd; there’s also an array of merch bundle options. To get your mitts on a copy, head over to the band’s webstore.
