Melbourne songwriter Gary Hubber returns with A Dangling Thread, a deeply reflective new album that explores uncertainty, identity, connection and the unfinished nature of life. Across ten thoughtful tracks, the release combines warm pop-rock melodies with conversational lyricism and understated storytelling, further establishing Hubber as a songwriter drawn to emotional truth rather than simple conclusions.
At its core, A Dangling Thread examines vulnerability, resilience, love, self-reflection and the complexities that define human experience. Rather than seeking neat resolutions, the album finds meaning in the ongoing process of navigating life’s ambiguities, allowing stories and emotions to unfold naturally through observation, memory and human connection.
The album’s lead single, ‘Hear It From You’, serves as both its emotional centrepiece and philosophical anchor. The reflective pop-rock track explores the experience of waiting for clarity during moments of emotional suspension, when certainty feels just out of reach. Inspired by the lyric ‘my future’s uncertain, a dangling thread’, the song ultimately provided the album’s title and thematic foundation.
“There are moments in life where everything feels suspended,” Hubber explains. “You sense that something’s shifting, but until certain words are spoken, nothing fully lands. This song sits inside that waiting period.”
Rather than rushing toward resolution, ‘Hear It From You’ embraces the tension between instinct and confirmation. Its warm instrumentation and intimate songwriting create space for uncertainty, reflecting the broader message running throughout the album: that life rarely offers tidy endings, and there is value in learning to live alongside unanswered questions.
Known for taking what he describes as the ‘long way round’ in his songwriting, Hubber balances classic rock influences with thoughtful contemporary reflection. His songs often leave room for interpretation, encouraging listeners to find their own experiences within the emotional landscapes he creates.
Each track on A Dangling Thread contributes to a larger narrative arc. Opening song ‘Running from the Light’ confronts mortality with curiosity and movement, while ‘People Are Strange’ celebrates individuality and the diversity of human experience. ‘Rock of Gibraltar’ honours those who quietly support others through difficult times, and ‘Jump Into The Fire’ encourages listeners to embrace emotional risk and personal growth. Elsewhere, ‘Blues Avenue’ serves as a tribute to music itself as a source of connection, release and shared understanding.
As the album progresses, its themes deepen and become more complex. ‘I’m Your Prisoner’ examines emotional contradiction and entrapment, while ‘Who Rules Your World?’ turns inward to question the influences shaping self-perception. The closing track, ‘Crazing On You’, deliberately resists resolution, leaving the album’s central metaphor intact by embracing ambiguity and the ongoing search for identity.
“It’s a record about living with uncertainty,” says Hubber. “Life is fragile, unfinished and unpredictable, but there’s still meaning in continuing forward anyway.”
Musically, the album blends melodic pop-rock songwriting with warm guitar-driven arrangements, grounded rhythms and introspective lyricism. Drawing on classic rock traditions while favouring nuance and restraint, Hubber crafts songs that feel both personal and broadly relatable.
The release follows Hubber’s acclaimed 2025 album New Tricks, which featured the standout track ‘Rise, Shine, and Fly’. The song was voted a Top Five Song of the Year by the Real Songwriters of Melbourne, further strengthening Hubber’s reputation as one of Australia’s more thoughtful and emotionally perceptive independent songwriters.
With A Dangling Thread, Hubber offers an album that refuses to simplify life’s complexities. Instead, it finds beauty in uncertainty, celebrating the fragile connections, unresolved moments and quiet acts of perseverance that shape everyday existence. It is a record that acknowledges the questions that remain unanswered while gently reminding listeners that meaning can still be found in the journey forward.
