King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are bringing the party back to Melbourne. Following the runaway success of its inaugural outing last year, The Croxton Block Party returns this October, once again transforming The Croxton car park into a two-day celebration of psychedelic rock, punk, experimental electronics and homegrown talent, all curated by one of Australia’s most relentlessly inventive bands.
Taking place across 17 and 18 October, the festival is anchored by two sprawling three-hour King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard headline sets, giving fans the chance to immerse themselves in the band’s ever-expanding universe over an entire weekend.
The supporting bill reflects the breadth of King Gizzard’s musical tastes. Saturday welcomes legendary Japanese pop-punk pioneers Shonen Knife, Byron Bay psych favourites Babe Rainbow, Heavy Moss, the psych-pop project led by King Gizzard bassist Lucas Harwood, alongside sets from Moktar, Techno666, B3LLY and a special Stu Mackenzie Eurorack performance that promises to venture even further into the band’s experimental instincts.
Sunday shifts gears with the uncompromising punk rock of Northern Beaches outfit C.O.F.F.I.N., the sharp post-punk edge of Gut Health, long-running psych outfit ORB, Melbourne favourites Public Figures, Glyconic, the returning Moktar, and more still to be announced.
The event also serves as something of a homecoming. King Gizzard first played The Croxton in late 2015 and have since become synonymous with the venue through multiple sold-out appearances, including their celebrated three-night residency, the lead-up to Polygondwanaland, and the venue’s memorable bushfire benefit show in 2020. A Block Party takeover feels like the natural next chapter in that relationship.
Beyond the music, King Gizzard are once again tying the festival to environmental action. Through a partnership with climate impact agency FEAT, a $1 “Solar Slice” from every ticket sold will support biodiversity restoration on Tasmania’s Lungtalanana Island, helping restore habitat for native species including the Bass Strait wombat and long-nosed potoroo.
With last year’s event proving an instant success and a lineup that spans underground legends, local favourites and one of Australia’s most adventurous live bands playing marathon headline sets, The Croxton Block Party looks set to cement itself as one of Melbourne’s essential music weekends.
