After a year spent refining his sound and expanding his creative circle, Finnish-Congolese rapper King Yanz shares ‘No Favours’, a subdued yet resonant single that marks a more introspective turn in his artistry.
Known for collaborations with artists such as Double S and Yung Fume, Yanz uses this latest release to explore personal boundaries and creative self-preservation with a clarity that feels both deliberate and hard-earned.
Blending elements of R&B, jazz, and hip-hop, ‘No Favours’ leans into a restrained sonic palette. Ambient synth textures create a hazy, almost meditative backdrop, allowing Yanz’s understated vocal delivery to take centre stage. The track’s minimalism works in its favour, drawing attention to the nuances in his tone and phrasing, while reinforcing the reflective mood that underpins the record. Rooted primarily in R&B, with subtle hip-hop influences, the song unfolds as a calm but resolute statement on self-worth.
talking about the track, he explains: “No Favours came from a place of exhaustion, but also clarity. This song is me acknowledging that. Not everything I have is up for grabs. Not everything I create has to be available. There’s a point where generosity turns into depletion, especially in creative spaces, where the line between collaboration and extraction can get blurry. I’ve had to learn that saying no doesn’t mean closing off, it means staying whole. It’s also a reminder that support isn’t something you earn through output. Real connection has to go both ways.
It’s about energy, boundaries, the cost of always being ‘available,’ and the quiet strength in choosing yourself even when the world expects more.”
Born Yannik Kiswamu, King Yanz’s background informs much of his artistic perspective. Raised between Finland and the UK, he reflects the sensibility of a third culture upbringing, merging Northern European influences with the rhythms and sensibilities of UK rap. His Congolese heritage remains an integral, if understated, part of his identity, contributing to a sound that feels layered and personal without being overtly defined by any single influence.
Now splitting his time between Barcelona, London and Helsinki, Yanz approaches music with a focus on authenticity and collaboration rather than trend-driven output. His work often draws from lived experience, resulting in songs that prioritise emotional resonance as much as lyrical content. This extends into his live performances with his band, Yanz & the Kingzmen, where elements of funk, jazz, and melodic rap intersect to create an immersive, genre-fluid experience.
