People Mover‘s new single ‘Cane Trash’ is a deliciously louche slice of uber cool indie jingle jangle, replete with a laconic delivery and an insouciant attitude. Slotting in with local bands like Radio Free Alice and Royel Otis, or overseas, Chicago’s Horsegirl, there is a charming DIY raw feel to the delivery, mixed in with a little swagger and an arched eyebrow. Ultimately it is classic antipodean fare that shares its genetic code with the Flying Nun roster (think The Clean, The Chills and the Bats). Distinguished company indeed.
The lyrics are drawn from the memories of siblings Lu and Dan, who grew up in Bundaberg where the sugarcane grows:
The track is an ode to the burn-off of sugarcane and the ashy snow that once filled the town’s air before harvest.
It’s achingly evocative and captures the atmosphere of rural life, with a little romanticism and longing entwined in its delivery:
