News: Sample Text Channel Nostalgia and Swagger on New Single ‘Oh My My’

Manchester alternative-rock quartet Sample Text are back with their infectious yet melancholic new single, ‘Oh My My’, a nostalgic punch of crunchy guitars, swaggering rhythm, and 00s indie attitude.

Drawing from the fuzzed-out tones of 90s alt-rock and the melancholic hooks of 00s indie, the band has steadily been making waves across the North West, turning heads with their high-energy performances and a keen ear for melody.

‘Oh My My’ is a track that could easily sit on a 2004 skate game soundtrack, combining the grit and groove of early-00s British guitar music with the angst and wit of a heavy night out. Produced by Tim Thomas (Blueprint Studios – Gorillaz, Snoop Dogg, Duran Duran, One Direction), the single captures both the raw edge of the band’s live sound and their knack for hook-laden songwriting. Tight, punching drums, biting guitar lines, and driving bass underpin urgent, infectious lead vocals to create a soundscape reminiscent of The Vaccines, Miles Kane, and Weezer.

Speaking about the track, lead guitarist and songwriter Jordan explains:
“Oh My My started as a song about a miscellaneous relationship breaking down, but then as it evolved and the lyrics got fleshed out, it became more specific toward a friendship. The core of it is the worry of a mate and their behaviour/lifestyle, but from a more nonchalant angle, maybe even a group of mates discussing another. ‘They got up to what on a night out?! Oh my my…’

“It was recorded with a pop-punk style in mind but with a more brit-core, 00’s indie scrapheap outlook. Trying to tie the themes of heavy nights out, concern for a friend and relationship pitfalls, with a cheeky flair.

“We recorded it at Blueprint Studios with Tim Thomas. The idea was to marry the heavy body of the chorus with the more reserved verses. The groovy bass and tight drums keep the rhythm section locked in and popping, whilst the raw crunch of the rhythm guitar gives it that punch when it flies in. The lead is bright and bouncy to really emanate that swagger of the british indie roots. Then with the breakdown we wanted to give it a wavy almost psychedelic sound to distinguish it from the verse and chorus. Almost simulating a head-in-the-clouds, disassociation relevant to the themes.”

Since their debut single in summer 2022, Sample Text have carved out a firm place in the North West scene, performing at beloved local venues such as Bootleg Social (Blackpool), Jacaranda (Liverpool), and Castle Hotel (Manchester), as well as Lush Festival in Stroud. They’ve recently supported established acts like CUD and up-and-comers including Canned Pineapple and The Greater Good.

With ‘Oh My My’, Sample Text deliver a sound that’s equal parts nostalgic and fresh — a fuzz-fuelled anthem that channels friendship, chaos, and reflection through their signature Northern lens.
