Swedish singer-songwriter Varas offers one last taste of his evolving artistry with the single ‘Bär Mig Ut’, taken from the upcoming EP Eaten By Worms.
Bringing together pop melodies with a rich blend of fuzzy guitars, punching drums and swelling synths, the new single is a striking example of both the indie soundscaping and commercially accessible writing that Varas is capable of.
‘Bär Mig Ut’ emerged from a collaboration with songwriter Linnéa Netin, whom Varas met during a songwriting course. Her introspective writing left a strong impression on him, shaping the track’s emotional depth. “The only change was to the chorus; her original verses remain intact,” Varas explains. “I was drawn to her writing style—it didn’t spell everything out, making it feel deeply personal to her.”
Following 18 months in the studio, Eaten By Worms reflects a collaborative process with celebrated producers James Dring (Gorillaz, Lana Del Rey) and Swedish multi-instrumentalist Bård Ericson (boerd). The EP captures Varas’ evolution, offering a pop-forward sound that’s as eclectic as it is personal. Influenced by genres ranging from ’70s rock and punk to hip-hop and soul, the project builds on the success of his previous EPs, Set One and There You Go!.
“I’ve always drawn inspiration from different types of music,” Varas shares. “I’m more intrigued by artists’ musical personalities than by the genres they belong to. I’m not trying to create genre-less music, but if that’s how it turns out, I’m fine with it. I aim to let my personality shine through my music—nobody’s personality is one-dimensional. I always contradict myself, so why wouldn’t my music?”
