Tex Perkins has just released a new album that is unlike anything he has done before. Tex Perkins Basic moves away from the structures and expectations that have defined much of his four-decade career, instead leaning into ambient soundscapes, electronic noise and instinct-led experimentation that feels deliberately uncontained.
Released into the world with little ceremony and even less compromise, Tex Perkins Basic feels like opening a door that was never meant to be public. These are recordings built in isolation, shaped without audience in mind, and that absence of expectation hums through every second. Ambient textures stretch and dissolve while fragments of guitar and rhythm drift in and out like half-caught transmissions.
Perkins has long built a catalogue that resists easy definition, from his work with The Cruel Sea to Beasts of Bourbon, but Basic strips that instinct back to something more exposed. There’s no band dynamic here, no traditional framework to push against. Just sound, evolving in real time, guided by an internal logic that reveals itself slowly rather than announcing its intent.
