Few venues have shaped Australian live music quite like The Corner Hotel, and this October the Richmond institution is marking three decades as one of the country’s most important stages with a six-week celebration featuring artists who have helped define its legacy, alongside a new generation continuing that tradition.
30 Years Young brings together a lineup that mirrors The Corner’s place in Melbourne’s musical history. Bodyjar return to the venue where they played the first show after it reopened as a live music destination in December 1995, creating a fitting full-circle moment for a band whose history has long been intertwined with the room.
Elsewhere, Meg Washington brings her acclaimed catalogue to the venue, Underground Lovers revisit one of Melbourne’s most familiar stages after more than 30 years at the forefront of Australian alternative music, while The Buoys arrive riding the momentum of their second album Concrete Cowboy. Guitar virtuoso Harts also joins the celebrations with the genre-hopping style that has made him one of Australia’s most distinctive performers.
One of the anniversary’s standout events arrives with The Engine Room & Special Guests, reuniting Hunters & Collectors members Barry Palmer, Jack Howard, Doug Falconer and John Archer for a one-night-only performance celebrating the 40th anniversary of the landmark album Human Frailty. Joined by a collection of guest vocalists, the performance promises to honour one of Australian rock’s defining records in the venue where generations of musicians have cut their teeth.
Beyond the concerts, The Corner is handing the venue over to some of Australia’s leading independent promoters and labels. I OH YOU, Good Music x UNIFIED and Love Police will each curate takeover events, while Cheersquad Records presents Chicksquad, featuring A.C. Saunders, Barb Waters, Freya Josephine Hollick, Grace Mitchell, Lisa Miller, The Maggie Pills and more.
The celebrations extend beyond the bandroom. Young Henrys will host five consecutive Saturdays of free Front Bar performances featuring Tentendo, Milly Strange, Lucky, Garage Sale and Kingswood, while The Corner Rewindtrivia nights, DJ sets, Drag Bingo and Country Struts boot-scooting classes ensure the anniversary reflects the venue’s broader role as a cultural meeting place rather than simply another concert room.
To commemorate the milestone, The Corner has also partnered with Carlton Draught on a limited-edition merchandise collection inspired by the venue’s instantly recognisable bandroom carpet, giving regulars the chance to take home a small piece of one of Melbourne’s most enduring live music institutions.
For 30 years, The Corner Hotel has been more than a stop on the touring circuit. It has been a proving ground, a community hub and the setting for thousands of unforgettable gigs. The 30 Years Young series celebrates not just the artists who have stood on its stage, but the audiences who have kept returning to stand in front of it.
