The Veils have announced new Australian dates for August, with exclusive headline shows at Oxford Arts Factory and Northcote Social Club.
The run arrives ahead of forthcoming album Fragile World, due June 19 via V2 Records, and alongside the release of new single Aurora.
‘Aurora’ is a beautifully restrained piece of late-night introspection, built around steady piano and the unmistakable voice of Finn Andrews. His layered vocals drift through the song with quiet gravity, while the arrangement gradually reveals hidden depth rather than announcing it.
Andrews says the track was written as it was being recorded, a rarity for him, inspired in part by a geomagnetic storm that lit skies across New Zealand. It is fitting. ‘Aurora’ glows slowly, then stays with you long after it fades.
The new album marks a notable shift from last year’s Asphodels, which leaned inward and hushed. Fragile World promises something more immediate and full-blooded. Recorded live to tape in New Zealand by Paddy Hill and produced by Tom Healy, the record was made instinctively, often with little fixed arrangement in place.
That sense of risk has always suited The Veils. Since signing to Rough Trade Records when Andrews was just 16, they have built a catalogue that moves between gothic grandeur, bruised balladry and feral rock intensity. Albums like Nux Vomica and Total Depravity proved they were never interested in staying still.
Backseat Mafia caught The Veils in 2024, where their live show again underlined the rare chemistry between elegance and menace that runs through their music. These smaller Australian rooms should suit them perfectly.
