There’s a particular kind of song that doesn’t announce its darkness — it just lets you sit in it. Melbourne artist SRU‘s new single ‘be ur girl’ is exactly that kind of track, and Backseat Mafia is excited to premiere both the song and its accompanying video ahead of release this Friday, 31 July.
SRU works at the meeting point of music, mythology and visual art, and ‘be ur girl’ is a good introduction to how those threads pull together. On the surface it’s dreamy, romantic, softly cinematic — the kind of alternative electronic production that rewards headphones. Underneath, it’s considerably more unsettled: a song about the moment you realise something isn’t good for you and reach for it anyway, whether that’s a person, a habit, a fantasy or simply a familiar fear.
The intro is glitchy and sticky before SRU’s delicious velvet vocals enter, soft and ethereal floating in the ether. The delivery is framed by harmonies in the distance and often discordant patterings coming in and out, weaving like a silken veil in the wind, slightly discombobulating and unnerving. The overall effect is a dreamy reverie, hypnotic and lush.
It’s a theme SRU has been circling for a while. The track sits within her upcoming debut EP, Raven of Exile, which draws on songs and ideas she’s been developing since 2018 — a body of work built around exile, belonging and the slow business of finding your way back to yourself. ‘be ur girl’ plays like a distilled version of that arc: surrender first, self-recognition after. SRU explains:
‘be ur girl’ explores the ways we lose ourselves in the things we believe will save us. Whether it’s another person, a vice, a fantasy, a fear or a coping mechanism, the song sits inside that moment of surrender, when we know something isn’t serving us, but we keep reaching for it anyway. Over time, I’ve come to see the track as a reflection on self-abandonment and the journey back from it. Beneath the dreamy production and romantic language is a deeper question: what happens when we stop looking outside ourselves for rescue? For me, ‘be ur girl’ is ultimately about returning to yourself.
That instinct toward world-building runs through everything SRU does — her practice extends well beyond the studio into photography and visual concept work, all of it feeding back into the same universe. ‘be ur girl’ is a doorway into that world rather than a standalone moment, and it’s a promising sign of what Raven of Exile has in store.
