We’re delighted to be able to premiere the ‘queen of German indie’, Stella Somner’s, new video for her single out today, ‘The Eyes Of The Stranger’. Taken from her forthcoming album Northern Dancer, out on October 30th via her own Northern Dancer Records, it’s her sixth solo album in total but only her second in English, it sees the Die Heiterkeit singer and songwriter sit somewhere between folk, chanson, indie and 60s pop.

Of the new track, Stella says “I know you’re not supposed to have favourites, but “The Eyes of the Singer” was my favorite song even before I actually wrote it. I had this idea of the song and a little voice memo and I was totally convinced that it was going to be the best song I ever wrote. And although it was the first song idea I had for the album, it turned out the be the last song I actually worked on because I was kind of scared that I might not do the song justice and fail it. I was very pleased with myself that “The Eyes of the Singer” turned out the way it did and it still is my favourite song from the album.”

Accompanied by little more than brushes of guitar and vibraphone at its outset, ‘The Eyes of the Singer’ has this lovely lilt about it, with its sound something like a Nico take on a Nick Drake song. as it gradually flowers, so these earthy strings hover and sweep, while there are touches of brass here and there, before coming to its beautifully pastorale close.

Stella Sommer has gained quiet a reputation in her homeland as the “queen of german indie” and one of the most talented songwriters of germany. She has been the singer and songwriter of her project Die Heiterkeit for 10 years now, releasing four criticially acclaimed albums. She was supposed to play SXSW this year with her solo project as well as with Die Heiterkeit.
‘Northern Dancer’ is Stella Sommer’s second solo album in english, her sixth album in total. It is an album of effortless and timeless beauty. And it is also her mostenchanted album yet. Somewhere between folk, chanson and 60’s-pop in firm Nico/Marianne Faithfull/Nick Cave/Beach Boys/Francoise Hardy territory Stella Sommer has created her very own genre. There is so much calm, dignity, warmth, grace and grandeur in this record, it sounds almost as if it doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone.

releases new album ‘Northern Dancer’– out 30 October 2020 on Northern Dancer Records –
– album preceded by 18 September single ‘The Eyes of The Singer’ –
