Say Psych: Track Review: The Creature Comfort – What We Want (Power, Corruption & Lies)

Rating: 7/10

Manchester’s The Creature Comfort have recently put out their first release in four years, the single ‘What We Want (Power, Corruption & Lies) which was recorded at the band’s base, Blueprint Studios Manchester, also used by the likes Elbow, Gorillaz and Bjork and was mixed by Fred Kindt. The eye-catching cover art is by Luke Insect.

The track starts with a funky groove courtesy of the rhythm section with a hypnotic bass line taking hold quickly. Punk-esq vocals carry key messages, including “business is warfare and we’re the ammunition” but a telling switch occurs and the track ends with “don’t ever believe you’re nothing to no-one, don’t ever believe you can’t make that change”. The tracks title gives a precis of its meaning, but as with so much else about this band the mask slips to reveal swirling undercurrents.
