Track: Cavetown brings Running With Scissors to Australia this February

Cavetown (Robin Skinner), has released his new album Running With Scissors, out now via Futures Music Group / Virgin Music Group. The record arrives just weeks ahead of his return to Australia, where Skinner will appear at Laneway Festival before playing two headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne.

Australian fans will be able to hear material from Running With Scissors live when Cavetown performs at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on 11 February and Melbourne’s Palais Theatre on 12 February, alongside national appearances at Laneway Festival. It marks his first Australian visit since the album’s completion, bringing a body of work shaped by transition, reflection, and hard-won clarity to local stages.

The album captures a moment of personal and artistic recalibration, written during a period Skinner describes as a threshold between youth and adulthood. Sonically, Running With Scissors expands Cavetown’s palette, weaving together hyper-pop textures, heavier guitar work and his familiar dream-pop warmth, while remaining anchored in intimacy and emotional directness.

Lead single “Cryptid”, released alongside the album, speaks directly to themes of visibility and self-definition. The accompanying video draws on Skinner’s experience as a transgender person, using metaphor rather than didacticism to explore how communities are labelled, hidden or misunderstood. It’s a song that has already become a focal point of the new record and is set to be a key moment in the upcoming live shows.

Alongside the album release, Cavetown has continued his broader commitment to community support, partnering with PLUS1 on select tour dates globally and maintaining the ongoing work of the This Is Home Project, which supports LGBTQ+ youth services. That sense of responsibility runs quietly through Running With Scissors, informing both its subject matter and its intent.

With Laneway Festival appearances and two headline theatre shows locked in, Cavetown’s February return offers Australian audiences a first chance to experience Running With Scissors in full voice, live and in context.
