From a sheep farm in regional Australia to the stages of Glastonbury, Fanny Lumsden has spent the past decade proving that there is no substitute for hard work. The two-time ARIA Award winner has built one of the most remarkable careers in Australian music through relentless touring, independent releases and songs that balance humour, heart and acute observation. Now, she has unveiled the first taste of her next chapter with the release of new single ‘Difficult Woman’.
Recorded live in a single take and featuring only Lumsden and her guitar, the track strips away any excess, placing the focus squarely on the songwriter herself. Raw and unvarnished, ‘Difficult Woman’ signals a deeply personal shift and serves as the opening statement from her forthcoming studio album.
“I know what I want, I say it kindly and that makes me a difficult woman,” Lumsden says, summing up the song’s quietly defiant spirit.
It arrives at a time when anticipation around the singer-songwriter is at an all-time high. With two consecutive ARIA Awards, ten CMAA Golden Guitar Awards and three AIR Awards to her name, Lumsden has emerged as one of the defining voices in contemporary Australian country music. Her rise has been built the grassroots way, through countless performances in country halls and regional communities, creating a devoted audience that has grown alongside her career.
Since making her Glastonbury Festival debut in 2023, Lumsden and her band have returned to the UK and Ireland five times in less than three years, appearing at festivals including The Long Road, C2C and Beautiful Days. Her appearance at Belladrum Festival was selected for BBC coverage, while British publication Entertainment Focus named her among the festival season’s highlights and Country In The UK described her performance as “the most uplifting set you will see all weekend”.
Back home, the momentum has shown little sign of slowing. Fresh from a European tour, Lumsden joined Paul Kelly and Lucinda Williams on dates of the Antipodean Tour before being personally selected by Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas to support three sold-out performances at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre. In 2025 alone she has headlined major events including Bluesfest, Big Red Bash, Tamworth Country Music Festival and Savannah In The Round.
The arrival of ‘Difficult Woman’ follows the announcement of Lumsden’s intimate ONLY FANS: Story Club tour, which she describes as part concert, part conversation and a celebration of the places and moments that shaped her. Featuring new songs, old favourites and stories never before shared from the stage, the performances promise to present her music in its most personal form.
