There’s something hypnotic about the way Kidskin builds tension. Her new single “Railroad Worm” begins in near-whispered intimacy, Rahnee Bliss’ voice hovering over skeletal electronic pulses before the track slowly unfurls into something far dreamier and more emotionally expansive. What starts as minimal synth melancholy gradually opens into a hazy, floating chorus that feels like neon lights smearing across rain-soaked train windows at 2am.
Backseat Mafia recently caught Kidskin supporting HIGHSCHOOL at the Lansdowne Hotel and it was impossible to ignore how quickly she pulled the room into motion despite the freezing Sydney winter outside. Even at their most sparse, her beats carry a physical force to them. Bodies started moving almost involuntarily, drawn in by the thumping low-end and the strange emotional warmth threaded through the electronics.
That tension between vulnerability and propulsion sits at the centre of “Railroad Worm”. Bliss describes the track as “an anecdote on hope and heartbreak,” and the song captures exactly that blurred emotional state where sadness and escapism begin feeding off each other. The whispered vocal delivery gives the early moments a sense of secrecy, as though the song is unfolding inside somebody’s internal monologue, before the dreamy chorus arrives and suddenly expands the emotional scale entirely.
As Kidskin, Bliss has steadily become one of Sydney’s more intriguing underground electronic artists, blending synth-driven dance music with conceptual visual aesthetics and an increasingly magnetic live presence. The project’s sound exists somewhere between dark club music and intimate bedroom confessionals, balancing heavy bass pressure with moments of startling softness.
That duality has helped her build momentum quickly, sharing stages with artists like Eartheater, Kirin J Callinan and Gut Health, while appearances at Dark Mofo and SXSW Sydney have only expanded her reputation further. An FBI Best Live Act nomination this year feels less like a surprise and more like confirmation that Sydney’s underground electronic scene is beginning to orbit increasingly around her.
