Finnish alternative metal outfit LUNA KILLS are wasting little time in building on the momentum of last year’s DEATHMATCH. The quartet have returned with new single ‘LOWER’, released via Sharptone Records, further expanding the emotionally charged and sonically abrasive sound that has quickly become their calling card.
Coming less than a year after the release of DEATHMATCH, the new track finds the band pushing deeper into themes of alienation and self-acceptance. Fronted by Lotta Ruutiainen and completed by guitarist Samuli Paasineva, drummer Jimi Kinnunen and bassist Lassi Peltonen, LUNA KILLS continue to balance crushing riffs and modern production with a vulnerability that cuts through the noise.
“The lyrics of the song are about dealing with the feeling that you don’t belong anywhere,” the band explain. “You feel the weight of not fitting into the expectations that society or others have placed upon you, or even the expectations you have for yourself.”
They continue: “It makes you question your reality, and at the same time, you slowly begin to feel like you’re fading away piece by piece and turning into someone you don’t recognize. The song carries a theme, both in lyrics and music, about the contrast between the softness of accepting yourself and the world you have built around yourself and the crushing weight of a never-leaving dread whispering whether you made the right choices.”
It is a theme reflected in the music itself. ‘LOWER’ shifts between moments of restraint and bursts of metallic intensity, highlighting the dynamic approach that has distinguished the band since the arrival of standout tracks including ‘WAVES’, ‘LEECH’, ‘sugar rush’, ‘slay ur enemies’ and ‘love u’.
With DEATHMATCH establishing LUNA KILLS as one of the more compelling voices emerging from Finland’s heavy music scene, ‘LOWER’ suggests the band are far from finished evolving. Instead, they appear intent on pushing their sound and emotional scope even further.
