With a whole swag of insouciance and poise, Jo Meares’ Silver Bullets fire more luscious sonic missiles with their new single, the enigmatically titled ‘Neil Young Saved My Life’. And while artists as diverse as Hank Williams, Tom Waites and Nick Cave are also thanked, poor Joni Mitchell is accused of attempted murder in this whispered paean to the redemptive powers of music. And you can see the genetic threads of all mentioned artists in the heavenly sounds.
Additionally, Meares weaves beautiful poetry, leavened with melancholia and cheap regrets, in the lyrics:
There should have been a dead man on the road tonight
My lucky star was shining bright
All alone in a motel tonight
Neil Young saved my life
Meares’s songwriting and delivery is always a gorgeous unguent for troubled times – he captures a late night indulgence, an aural velvet blanket that envelopes and immerses you in its arms, and ‘Neil Young Saved My Life’ is inflected with a touch of humour and warmth:
