Track: Philip Kane releases the dark, depraved and cathartic single ‘8 Stone, Tall and Handsome (ft Boz Boorer and Fiona Price)’

Philip Kane, formerly of London indie band Avalanche, has an incredible voice soaked in whiskey, pain and depravity. His new single ‘8 Stone, Tall and Handsome’ is an absolutely cathartic and immensely enjoyable indulgence that reeks of late night bars and more than a hint of forbidden pleasures. Indeed, his lyrics match: seedy nights, paid for humiliating love and a self-deprecatory dark humour.

The sordid tale told has a Nick Cave-style raw and brutal exposition: unflinching and honest with a sparkle and a flash of wit. At the very heart is a poetic magnificence that takes us through a lurid world of self-deception.

There is a soul-infested bluesy buzz and an immense orchestration – and as a self-styled crooner, Kane has painted a dark rich canvas upon which to paint the sordid tales of indulgence and self-loathing. The unhinged, wild and frenetic solo by guitarist and Morrissey collaborator Boz Boorer adds to the catalytic conversion: an exploding and deranged pouring of gasoline to the verbal fire. Acclaimed musician and composer Fiona Brice‘s violin provides a distant and haunting sweep to the sound:
