Ruby Gill is digging into the past on ‘Jamie’, the second single from her forthcoming third album ‘Fishing is not about fishing’, out October 16.
The Joburg-born, Victorian-based musician and poet uses ‘Jamie’ to confront the damage carried out of childhood and the things left unsaid as a teenager. There’s little hiding behind the arrangement. The music stays deliberately sparse, leaving Gill’s voice and lyrics to do the heavy lifting.
It follows last month’s ‘Carol / not carol’ and points towards a different sound on the new record. Co-produced with Tom Iansek, ‘Fishing is not about fishing’ was recorded in London with Lewis Coleman and Jess Ellwood, with Gill recording her lead vocals live and without edits.
The album moves beyond the more contained sound of 2025’s ‘Some Kind of Control’, tackling everything from existential dread and political frustration to queer life and everyday absurdity. Gill’s deadpan humour remains firmly in the mix, even when the subject matter gets uncomfortable.
With two Australian Music Prize nominations and a recent AIR Award for Best Independent Country Album behind her, Gill heads into album three with little interest in emotional small talk. ‘Jamie’ makes that very clear.
