Melbourne-based supergroup Fancy Weapon invited us into their fuzzy world in March with the debut single ‘Squid’ (see my review here), and just over a month later they return with their instruments swinging with the amusingly entitled single ‘Squirmin’ Merman’.
The band features Mick Turner, Claire Birchall, Joel Silbersher and Guy Maddison, members of legendary Australian and international bands God, Dirty Three, Mudhoney, Paper Planes, Venom P Stinger, Hoss, Lubricated Goat, Smoked Salmon. And the swagger and experience shines through every note.
‘Squirmin’ Merman’ eases on the brakes compared to their debut – it’s a louche, loose laid-back track with a bluesy feel, augmented by delicate harmonies and a chugging guitars. The earnest vocals are urgent and yearning, the background filled with wobbly sounds: it is a panoply of sonic expressions.
The accompanying video by Turner himself features performances and hazy psychedelic backgrounds:
The new single and video come ahead of the bands upcoming shows with Savak (May 1, Thornbury Bowls Club), Mogwai (May 25, Forum, Melbourne) and Tortoise (May 30, Corner Hotel, Melbourne).
Fancy Weapon’s debut album will be released on Poison City on 19 June. It will be available on limited edition ‘Deep Sea Blue’ colour vinyl (first 100 copies signed by the band), CD and all digital stores world-wide. Preorders are available now via Poison City E-Store and Bandcamp. You can pre-order here and through the link below.
