Track: The Berries – Ancient Steel

“I’ve always been attracted to pop sensibilities and I was interested in making music that leaned more towards that instead of volume and distortion,” said Matt Berry, of The Berries about their last album. The former Big Bite and Happy Diving member and his band have released a new stand along single ‘Ancient Steel’, via Run for Cover records that’s streaming everywhere now.

There’s an 80s flavour to the track, with its starting sounding like something Robert Palmer would have gladly jumped aboard, but it settles into this slightly prog-indie, taking odd ways around the changes to make things sound slightly angular, but deeply melodic and satisfying at the same time.
