Track: Unknown Mortal Orchestra reveal first new single in three years, Weekend Run

Unknown Mortal Orchestra have released their first new music in nearly three years, dating back to 2018’s Sex & Food album with a new single, Weekend Run, out now on the ever brilliant Jagjaguwar label. It’s not that UMO – aka Runah Nielsen hasn’t kept himself busy – quite the opposite, releasing the IC-01Hanoi project, collaborating with Aminé (“Buzzin”), Gorillaz (“Severed Head” ft. GoldLink), Free Nationals (“Beauty & Essex” ft. Daniel Caesar) and India Shawn (“Too Sweet”), and putting out remixes for Westerman’s “Drawbridge” and Soccer Mommy’s “circle the drain.”

Of Weekend Run, Nielsen says “At the end of the day I don’t take for granted that I have the perfect job – I truly work to make music that will set someone’s day right and I think that shines through on Weekend Run.” It’s truly a slab of sunshine pop – perhaps influenced by his recent relocation to Palm Springs, as he mixes up woozy funk and sweeping AOR into something that wouldn’t be out of place on a Stevie Wonder record – funky, melodic and memorable.
