Live Review & Gallery: An Evening With Eric Gales at Factory Theatre – Gadigal Land/Sydney, 22.11.25

Factory Theatre was properly humming on Saturday night, with half the room seated and the rest of us staking out whatever floor space we could claim and not dare move from. What we got in return was two hours of world-class performance from Eric Gales, the man who, when it comes to instrumentation, lives on a different plane entirely.

Five years sober and touring ‘Crown‘, he carried himself with the pride of a musician who’s rebuilt both the personal and the professional parts of his life. He let the guitar speak first, second, and basically every time after that. There was a generosity to the way he paced the set, as he trusted us to follow wherever he went.

Despite what you might think, it wasn’t a night reserved for the blues diehards. Gales sidestepped any neat genre label, tapping into rock bite, blues warmth, and precision only a handful of people ever manage to command. It was an Olympic-level performance that hit you more in the chest than the head – something you could choose to analyse so much as absorb.

If his name’s on a bill near you, go. There aren’t many players who can hold a room so completely without overexerting a thing, and watching someone operate at that level is its own joy.
