New Music: Brooklyn’s Grumby release the breathtaking electronic soul of Refuse

Out on 15th September is the debut EP from Brooklyn based duo Grumb. Titled ‘Changes’, the pair have worked with a host of talented vocalists on the EP, including Lindsay Lowend, Hollywood Anderson, Heavy Mellow, Abbi Press, Tristan Chase and Cautious Clay. Ahead of its release, the duo have released a preview in the shape of Refuse, which features Häri Mint on vocals.

Described as ‘a soulful homage to the struggles and evolutions of personal identity that speaks to the album’s larger themes of relationships, heartbreak, and emotional highs and lows’, it opens with these bubbling, sprawling synth lines that take you on a electronic soul trip, with Mint laying down something smooth but soulful down on top of it, as firstly strings and then bass and piano (alternately) fill the gaps. From there it ebbs and flows, slowly unfurling to reveal both a stripped back percussive beat, but also the depth and beauty of Mints vocal. Breathtaking.

Catch Grumby at their EP release show this Thursday (September 10th) at Baby’s all Right in Brooklyn.
