Racetrack Gospel is the new project from Sam Herlihy, ex-lead singer and songwriter from Hope of the States. He been joined by Martin Samuels, Max Backshell & Simon Goldring to form Racetrack Gospel and the band have released the first fruits of their labour in the shape of a new track – Wiseblood. Its taken from the quartets debut EP of the same name, which drops on 20th July.

Wiseblood opens with this bubbling piano line, and this sort of ambitious (much like his Hope of the States output) almost prog influenced if not downright incorporated, rock. There’s muscular guitar lines, and these wiry melodic fragments, as Herlihy lays down the musical tale of two contrasting styles – the sweeping chorus on one hand, the more matter of fact, short phrases of the verse. As it progresses, so it works itself up into a final, noisy, frenzy.

It’s quite something.
