News: Annika Zee Releases New Album ‘Emerald Spy’

Toronto-born multimedia artist and genre-defying musician Annika Zee has returned with the new album Emerald Spy, her most conceptually daring project yet.

The album is a vivid, emotionally resonant statement that weaves together diverse sounds and global perspectives to confront technology, race, and identity in the digital era. Blending 90s pop nostalgia, ambient electronica, and abstract lyrical storytelling, Emerald Spy explores the tension between personal fragmentation and collective empowerment while rejecting the confines of conventional pop. Zee offers a vision of the future liberated from extractive technologies and biased AI systems, rooted instead in memory, resistance, and radical tenderness.

“This album connects people across socio-economic and cultural boundaries,” Zee says. “It’s about challenging imposed systems while also celebrating the beauty of imagination, resilience, and multiplicity”.

The seven-track album spans a wide emotional and conceptual terrain, tapping into social commentary and emotional sincerity – from critiquing war, fame and social media on ‘Can’t Hear You’, to which ‘Wondering’ envisions a dreamy, optimistic future, and tracks like ‘I’m Dead’ which discus identity, stereotyping, and toxic love with biting clarity.

Zee’s background as a multimedia artist informs the album’s layered aesthetic. A graduate of NYU’s Clive Davis Institute and currently studying printmaking and publications at OCAD University, she blends experimental production with lush songwriting, merging analogue textures and futuristic soundscapes. Her work has been featured in across tastemaker press including the likes of i-D Magazine, The Fader, and Wonderland. Having also composed music for Broad City, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, American Eagle, and Anna Sui, Zee is a multitalented artist with a lot of achievements already under her belt.

With Emerald Spy, Annika Zee stakes her claim as an artist who dares to imagine a world beyond digital dystopia, where music, memory, and resistance coexist in vivid, dreamlike harmony.
