News: Damien Cain Returns with Emotional New Single ‘Caleb (JD Radio Edit)’

German-born, Ireland-based alternative artist Damien Cain returns with ‘Caleb (JD Radio Edit)’, a piano-driven pop-rock ballad that combines deeply personal storytelling with cinematic production and powerful vocal performances.

Released in time for Pride Month, the single features UK vocalist Jamie Wiltshire, creating a rare male/male duet that explores themes of memory, loss and the difficult process of letting go. Built around a foundation of piano and melodic rock instrumentation, the track moves effortlessly between quiet reflection and emotional release, balancing intimacy with widescreen production.

Originally appearing on Cain’s acclaimed album Standarte, ‘Caleb’ has been reimagined for standalone release through a new radio-focused production by Jay Dixie, whose credits include work with Meghan Trainor and Flo Rida. The updated version is designed for broader accessibility and airplay while preserving the emotional depth that made the original recording so compelling.

For Cain, however, the heart of the song remains unchanged:
“Caleb was always in my mind. The song describes a real authentic memory that at some stage just wanted to be told; I had to write the lyrics, then the music and added this song as probably the most personal piece I have ever written. But Caleb was never planned as a duet. I asked UK vocalist Jamie Wiltshire to provide backing vocals, but when I heard him singing the song, it added a new dimension, like a dialogue between two generations sharing the same memory. I just had to go with this duet version.”

What began as a supporting vocal role ultimately transformed the song’s identity. Rather than a single narrator recounting a personal experience, ‘Caleb’ evolves into a conversation between two voices, each revisiting the same emotional landscape from a different perspective. The result is a performance that feels intimate, unresolved and profoundly human.

Musically, the single sits at the intersection of alternative pop and melodic rock, drawing on cinematic influences while allowing the vocal performances to remain front and centre. Piano-led arrangements provide the emotional foundation, while carefully layered production expands the song’s scope without overshadowing its vulnerability.

While the original album version leaned further into Cain’s established alternative rock and gothic-tinged sound, the new single introduces a broader pop sensibility. The transformation offers listeners a fresh perspective on one of the most personal songs within Standarte while retaining the emotional authenticity that defines the record.

Cain’s career spans more than three decades and began in the European underground music scene with Celtic Crypt before he achieved wider recognition under the name CAIN. His breakthrough single ‘Age of Darkness’ became a cult favourite across Europe’s dark alternative community, selling more than 250,000 copies and earning the IMPALA Diamond Award for independent sales.

Over the years, Cain has collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including Sir Christopher Lee, who recorded Cain’s composition ‘Elenore’, and Wayne Hussey of The Mission. His work as a songwriter, lyricist and producer has also reached the German charts through projects including ‘Dein Herz’ and Dark Symphonies.

Beyond the recording studio, Cain has built a reputation for ambitious theatrical and conceptual projects. He served as librettist, lyricist and performer for the first German-language Dracula musical, further demonstrating his commitment to narrative-driven art. Since relocating to Ireland, his songwriting has taken a more introspective direction, culminating in the release of Standarte in 2025. The album has since achieved international success, including reaching No. 4 on the US Alternative Charts.

Produced through a global network of musicians spanning Ireland, the UK, Germany, Finland, the United States and South America, and mixed and mastered at Hellfire Studios in Dublin, Standarte stands as a testament to Cain’s long-standing dedication to atmosphere, storytelling and emotional resonance.

Alongside his music, Cain continues to support social causes and is a proud supporter of the LGBTQ+ youth homelessness charity akt, which assists young LGBTQ+ people aged 16–25 facing homelessness, unsafe housing and hostile living environments.
