Death Cab for Cutie have released the new video for ‘Stone Over Water’, just weeks out from their Australian headline tour this November.
Taken from the band’s 11th studio album ‘I Built You A Tower’, ‘Stone Over Water’ deals with the strain of pretending everything is fine when it very much isn’t. Its new video takes a lighter route through that emotional weight, pairing the song with slapstick animation and a small protagonist having a spectacularly bad day.
Musician and animator Sean Solomon directs and creates the clip, drawing inspiration from the visual gags of cartoonists including MAD Magazine’s Sergio Aragonés. Rather than matching the song’s sadness frame for frame, Solomon plays against it, gradually steering the story towards connection and the idea that helping somebody else can sometimes pull you out of your own head.
‘I Built You A Tower’ also marks a significant reset for Death Cab for Cutie. After two decades with Atlantic Records, the band return to independent territory with ANTI-, working again with producer John Congleton. The album follows the anniversary tours for ‘Transatlanticism’ and ‘Plans’, with those shows helping push the band towards a leaner, more immediate approach to the new material.
Australian fans will hear that new chapter live when Death Cab for Cutie arrive in November. The tour opens at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on November 12 before heading to Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena on November 13 and Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall on November 15. Tickets are on sale now.
