Singer/songwriter Damien Jurado has been growing his craft to new heights over the last few years with albums like St. Bartlett, Maraqopa, Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son, and Visions of Us on the Land. He’s taken a simple folk sound and structure and built it into something epic. Yet even without the Richard Swift production and 70s vibe, Jurado’s sound remains just as big with nothing more than his voice and acoustic guitar.

On May 4th Jurado will be releasing his new album on Secretly Canadian titled The Horizon Just Laughed. According to Secretly Canadian:

Like previous albums, The Horizon Just Laughed started with a dream. Though, that’s where things change, as they often do. It is Damien Jurado’s first self-produced album in a 20+ year career, more personal and more rooted than even his “Maraqopa” trilogy, as though after so much time on the road he’s stumbled upon his home (quoting Claire Carey Deering’s album bio).

On first listen to single “Over Rainbows and Rainier” it sounds as if Damien Jurado is getting back to basics. The song is a delicate piece of songwriting with Jurado’s religious imagery coming through. It’s a beautiful track.

The Horizon Just Laughed will be released on May 4th on Secretly Canadian. Check out “Over Rainbows and Rainier” below, as well as upcoming tour dates.
