Say Psych: New Music, A Quest EP by Wall/Eyed

Wall/Eyed are a four-piece from Paris, who formed in late 2013. They describe their music as taking inspiration from ‘post-psychedelicism and Bauhaus’, which is an intriguing combination which would suggest to me that it might be in the direction of Shoegaze. Indeed, while the band’s music does consist of elements that are both introvert and melancholy, I would place Wall/Eyed away from who we might consider to be the prime exponents of that particular genre. There is a definite lushness and lustre to this EP which places it firmly alongside some contemporary bands, most notably for me Psychic Ills. Tracks such as ‘Of Birds and Clouds’ have that beautifully languidness that was present on the more recent Psychic Ills albums, while ‘Mental Traveller’ has some wonderful moments of spaciousness to it, allowing the mind and the music to breathe, before really getting down into an fantastic high-tempo final section which really opens the track up. This is a really accomplished EP which, I understand, is a foretaste of an album which will be appearing sometime next year. On this evidence it is going to be something to look forward to.
