Say Psych: Video Premiere: Rhys Bloodjoy – I Believe I Can Die

Sister 9 Recordings have just announced pre-orders for Rhys Bloodjoy‘s upcoming Evils Highway EP with an exclusive Backseat Mafia Video Premiere of the lead single, ‘I Believe I Can Die’! The EP will be Bloodjoy’s first solo release since last year’s album, The Chaos In Veins—and is set for release on 31 October.

For the uninitiated, Bloodjoy is a one man noise machine, using sophisticated loops, echo drenched harmonies and reverb soaked melodies to create a sound described as “a stroke of genius that will haunt you long into the night.” A prolific and highly esteemed songwriter, Bloodjoy emerged on the underground scene in 2014 and has since gained in strength and stature, honing his sound to create truly electrifying live performances.

The Evils Highway EP features five tracks which were apparently inspired by a lucid nightmare—a one-way trip to hell—wherein the writer found himself on a desolate desert highway, only to hitch a ride with a psychotic Elvis Presley type character who is referred to in the sleeve notes only as ‘Evils’.

Evils Highway EP marks a stylistic change in the Bloodjoy approach, with Rhys no longer restricting himself to creating beats solely by hitting the body of his acoustic guitar—but instead, allowing himself to use sample pads to play the beats and percussion directly into his complex chain of looper pedals. This change is evident straight from the opening bars of the darkly infectious lead single, ‘I Believe I Can Die’.
