See: Lime Cordiale and Idris Elba’s incredible and improbable collaboration continues to bloom with the release of a video for the absolutely brilliant track ‘What’s Not To Like’, plus EP and tour news.

The musical collaboration between Australia’s foremost indie dance pop outfits Lime Cordiale and iconic and enigmatic British actor Idris Elba is at first blush one of the most outlandish concepts imaginable. Following the fabulous single ‘Apple Crumble’ released last month, the dynamic paring have just released the brilliant track ‘What’s Not To Like’ as another tasty sample of an EP – ‘Cordi Elba’ – due out on 14 January 2022.

One listen to the results removes any doubt whatsoever about such an unprecedented coupling. Elba brings a cheeky chappie persona to the music with his laconic charm and wit – I am reminded of Madness sometimes in the delivery, inflected as it is with a droll cockney twang – and his vocals are diamond encrusted velvet: an element of barbed-wire roughage added to a smooth and luxurious tenor. Lime Cordiale are purveyors of indelible dance-inflected pop. The mix results in an explosive chemistry that can barely be contained in one dimension.

It’s almost too cool and loveable to bear – but an utterly enjoyable pop collaboration that is anthemic, melodic and filled with such a sense of joy. Elba says of the track:

It’s a song about finding who you really are and not chasing who you think people want you to be. It is a driver’s seat singer classic.

Directed and produced by Ken Weston, the video is enthralling with an infectious humour and grace. Oli from Lime Cordiale says:

This music video was really driven by Idris. Louis and I suggested an animated clip, seeing as we’re on the other side of the world and Idris doesn’t exactly have the most free schedule, but Idris pushed us to find a green screen studio. The song is about the different versions of ourselves so Idris talked us through this concept of his.

Louis adds:

We received Idris’ footage first and then we had to somehow match his performance! God, he just looks so good on the screen! How could we possibly look that good! Ken Weston who is working on our live video content for the album tour was amazing and putting all this together. It ain’t easy working with two teams on different continents.

The unbridled pop mechanics of this single are euphoric and illustrious with it’s singalong choruses and suave delivery. What a way to enter the festive season:

‘What’s Not To Like’? Absolutely nothing. Elba for the next James Bond, I say (and maybe Lime Cordiale can do the theme song?).

The single is available to download/stream here and you can preorder the EP here, and is out through Chugg Music and 7Wallace Music. Spoiler alert: I have listed to the EP and it is simply magnificent. Watch out for my review.
